Program Details

Thanks to the program’s innovative hands-on curriculum, you’ll be well prepared to teach and lead in urban schools. You’ll learn real-life practical solutions to 21st-century education challenges through interdisciplinary projects that focus on research-based strategies for teaching science and math in urban contexts.

Experience from day one

Because effective urban educators are fully engaged with the communities and students they serve, you will be immersed in secondary school classrooms from day one. Projects and clinical experiences will be linked, and you will be prepared to lead your own classroom during the second semester.

The 36 credit hour M.A.T.

Alongside your clinical experiences in the schools, Fellows will complete projects, not courses. Project topics include equity and diversity in Indianapolis schools and communities; adolescent identity, culture and education; educational theories and urban classroom practice; and urban schools and schooling.

The centerpiece of the fellowship curriculum is the three-part science and math pedagogy project. You will work with College of Arts and Sciences faculty to develop and complete a challenging research project in your content area, and you will work with the School of Education faculty to develop the teaching materials necessary to facilitate your own students’ exploration of that project.
