Program Details

The UIndy program will prepare professionals to teach and lead in city schools through an innovative project-based curriculum. The program emphasizes real-life, practical solutions to the challenges facing 21st century urban schools through interdisciplinary projects that focus on research and its application in the urban classroom, as well as curriculum, technology, teaching skills and collaboration with colleagues to impact student learning.

36 credit hours

Although the curriculum will not be finalized until Fall 2008, it is expected that Fellows will complete a series of projects in the first year, as well as a capstone experience, leading to 32 credits earned toward the MAT degree. Fellows would then earn the final four credits of the MAT degree by conducting and presenting an original research project that is grounded in their teaching practice.

Experience from day one

Because effective urban educators are fully engaged with the communities and students they serve, Fellows will be immersed in secondary school classrooms from day one of the program. Projects and clinical experiences will be linked, and Fellows will be prepared to lead their own classroom during the second semester.

Mentoring support

Upon satisfactory completion of the initial 32 credits, Fellows will be eligible to apply for their teaching license, and for positions at high-need urban secondary schools. During the first year of teaching, which is the second year of the program, Fellows will receive support through mentoring programs provided by UIndy and the school district. This mentoring support will continue throughout the Fellows’ three-year teaching commitment.
