Welcome to the Secondary Education Program! If you would like to become a teacher in a middle or high school in the following areas, then this is the program for you. (Click program for class listings. All guides in Microsoft Word format.)
If you would like to teach in elementary, middle, or high school in the following areas, then this also is your program.
With any of these majors, you will work closely with an advisor and the faculty in your chosen content area, as well in Teacher Education. You will be offered a program that gives you the opportunity to become a fully licensed content specialist with the skills to motivate and guide the learning of all students in all types of classrooms.
After you have met our Entrance to Program requirements during March of your sophomore year, then you are ready to begin your professional course sequence. During your junior year you will learn how to plan and present motivational, standards-based lessons in your content area. You also will learn about special learning needs and how to meet these needs within your classes. During each semester you will be working with a team of teachers in area schools who will welcome you into their classrooms, share their expertise, and give you feedback on the lessons you prepare and present. Our graduates tell us that these classroom experiences (which actually begin in limited ways during your freshman year) are a major strength of our professional program.
During senior year you will complete your content requirements and your student teaching experience. You will have two eight-week placements, at two different developmental levels and in two different types of schools. While your day is spent in your placement classroom, you will return to campus for semi-weekly seminars. These seminars will help you focus on instructional issues and also guide you through the process of becoming licensed, as well as applying and interviewing for your own teaching position.
In addition to your content specialty license, University of Inianapolis offers additional options. You can choose to add a license to teach students needing Mild Interventions. This license (generally called Special Education) makes you extremely marketable and makes you especially qualified to deal with specific learning needs. You also could choose to add a license for Reading. Reading teachers are in especially high demand at secondary level. If you are interested in computers and other forms of technology, you also could add a certificate in Educational Technology. This assures that you can be a leader in utilizing the most appropriate technology to enhance various types of teaching and learning.
The program offers opportunities for you to become a highly-qualified, responsive, and motivational teacher. Please review the links describing our courses, program design, and activities.
