Message from the Coordinator

Dear Prospective MAT Candidate,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Master of Arts in Teaching website!

The Master of Arts in Teaching Program is designed for career changers who wish to become Secondary School (Middle/junior high and high school) teachers. The program is based on the university's belief about the importance of service and leadership in teaching.

Career changers can apply to the MAT program if they have already completed an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited university with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and have passed Praxis I, a Pre-professional Skills test (in Reading, Writing and Mathematics) required of all teachers. Middle level/High School Licenses are offered in the specialty areas of Mathematics,Business, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth-Space Science, and Physics), English Language Arts, Theatre, Social Studies, and Modern Languages (French, Spanish, and German). All Grade Licenses are offered in Music, Health/Physical Education and Visual Arts.

Following admission to the MAT program, candidates are assigned to a cohort and complete a comprehensive program designed to ensure that they know how to teach adolescents, think systematically about their practices and learn from their experiences. Throughout the program candidates consider themselves members of a learning community devoted to best practices in teaching. For more information about our programs, please contact Mrs. Jody Rose in the Master of Arts in Teaching Office at 317-788-2113 or via e-mail at jrose@uindy.edu or the MAT Program Coordinator, Dr. Angelia Ridgway via e-mail at aridgway@uindy.edu.
