Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), Sigma Omicron Chapter

Kappa Delta Pi encourages high professional, intellectual and personal standards and recognizes outstanding contributions to education. Kappa Delta members are chosen as the top 20% students in the education program. Kappa Delta Pi strives to provide outreaches in the young reading community through Reader's Theatre. Our chapter also has an invested interest in providing Teacher Conversation Series to prepare future teachers.

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. It is an outcome of the recommendations of the National Policy in Education (1986) that laid special emphasis on upholding the quality of higher education in India.


Student Education Association (SEA)

SEA, the Student Education Association, is a campus organization that advances the interests of students preparing for a career in education by helping students develop a better understanding of the education profession and allowing students to have a voice in matters affecting their profession as a future teacher. Along with enhancing a student's professional development, SEA helps strengthen connections in the field of education while promoting leadership development and opportunities for community service.

Departmental Awards

Outstanding Future Educator Awards
Sponsored by the Indiana Association of Colleges for Teacher Education

Each year the Indiana Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (IACTE) recognizes Outstanding Future Educators. Faculties from its member colleges of education select recipients of this prestigious award. Eligible recipients must be seniors who have demonstrated excellence in both university coursework and K-12 field experiences including student teaching. One award is given from each of the following programs: elementary education, secondary education, and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). The recipients are honored at a state-wide recognition banquet and program. The names of the University of Indianapolis recipients are engraved on a permanent plaque that hangs in the hallway of the Department of Teacher Education.

Arthur B. Cook Award

Kappa Delta Pi established this award in honor of Arthur B. Cook, husband of Dr. Pat Cook, faculty emeritus of the School of Education. Mr. Cook was a baseball player, an English teacher, and an avid sportsman. In celebration of his life, this award is given to an outstanding secondary major (junior) who is also a student athlete. In addition to a cash award, the recipient's name is engraved on a permanent plaque hanging in the hallway of the Department of Teacher Education.

Davis, Merkel, Rayburn & Todd Scholar

Drs. Davis, Merkel, Rayburn and Todd, four former professors at the University of Indianapolis, established this award to financially assist an outstanding elementary education major. Recipients of this award must be juniors. In addition to tuition assistance, the scholar's name is engraved on a permanent plaque hanging in the hallway of the Department of Teacher Education.

Outstanding Future Reading Teacher Award

Each year the Indiana Reading Professors (IRP) recognizes Outstanding Future Reading Teachers. IRP members select one recipient from each Indiana College of Teacher Education for this prestigious award. Eligible recipients must be seniors who have demonstrated excellence in literacy coursework, field experiences, and professional involvement. The recipients are honored at the Indiana State Reading Association's (ISRA) annual recognition banquet and state conference.

Gregg Baud Goal Achievers Award

Dr. Ed Wall established this award to honor individuals who have faced and overcome serious challenges in order to become a teacher. The persistence and dedication shown by these individuals model the dispositional qualities that are the hallmark of effective educators. Secondary and elementary candidates are eligible for this award. In addition to a monetary award, the recipients name is engraved on a permanent plaque hanging in the hallway of the Department of Teacher Education.

The Future Colleague Award

This award is created by Mrs. Susan Bryant, principal of the Decatur Early Childhood Center. She supports our teacher education department in many ways, serving as an instructor, a cooperating teacher, and a member of the Decatur Partnership Steering Committee. This award is presented to an outstanding junior and provides monetary support for student teaching materials.
