The Transition to Teaching Program at the University of Indianapolis is designed for qualified persons with undergraduate degrees in a content area who wish to obtain initial teacher licensure at the secondary level. Licensure can be earned in the following content areas: English, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Life and Physical Sciences, Business, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Health/Physical Education, Music, and Theatre.
The program consists of three modules of professional education courses and associated field experience and clinical practice components. Successful completion of each module is required before proceeding to the next module. During all three modules courses are offered in the evening and on weekends.
Modules I and II require some field experience, which is completed during the day. Module III requires a full-time commitment because participants will be completing their clinical practice as well as taking education courses. The culminating activity of the clinical practice will be a portfolio. After successful completion of the third module of the program, participants are eligible for recommendation for licensure as secondary school teachers.
The complete Transition to Teaching track is offered in three modules, with the first module starting in Summer II and the third module being completed at the end of April.
A unique aspect of this program is that it is offered utilizing a cohort model. The use of a cohort ensures that candidates encounter a common set of learning experiences and opportunities to share reflections on those experiences. The cohort offers a collection of perspectives, sets up patterns of collaborative behaviors, and establishes the foundation and attitudes necessary for building and maintaining a community of learners.
The Transition to Teaching courses are offered at the graduate level. Classes are held during the evenings and weekends during Module I. (Modules I and II require a field experience.) Module III requires a clinical practice component that is a fulltime commitment. Participants in the Transition to Teaching track may have classes in common with the candidates in the Master of Arts in Teaching program. The dedicated staff of the Transition to Teaching track ensures that candidates exit the course of study possessing the skills of competent and caring teachers.
Field Experience and Clinical Practice
Some of the courses require field experiences that need to be completed during the day. The multi-week clinical practice experience allows for placement in two different school settings. After the first eight-week placement of the clinical practice experience, the professional portfolio is due.
