Kinesiology Club

The UIndy Kinesiology Club was formed in the fall semester 2004. The student majors club which previously been entitled the 'Physical Education Majors and Minors (PEMM)' club and had experienced low student attendance in recent years. New faculty sponsors Mrs. Megan Schmidt and Dr. Jennifer VanSickle oversaw regularly scheduled student-led meetings (twice a month) throughout the school year. The club designed a motto and logo, secured a sponsor for club t-shirts, and established a membership fee of $5.00. In the fall, several members of the club attended the IAPHERD Convention, meeting with students from other similar clubs to exchange and develop ideas for running successful college and university clubs. In December, the club conducted a canned food drive at a UIndy basketball game to benefit a local homeless shelter. In the spring, the club hosted Arthur Hightower, from the NCAA, who spoke on "Finding Internships and Landing Your First Job". This meeting was open to the entire university. In conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four Basketball Tournament, club members volunteered with the NCAA YES Clinic, where college coaches work with sixth through twelfth grade students on basketball and life skills. Club members gained valuable experience in both the preparation and administration of the clinic as well as instruction and organization of a major sport event.

The 2005-06 academic year was another rewarding experience for the University of Indianapolis Kinesiology Club, a student organization for those majoring in Kinesiology. The club was formed in 2004 by Dr. Jennifer VanSickle and Mrs. Megan Schmidt. In November several club members attended the 2005 IAHPERD State convention where they both learned from and networked with professionals in their field. December provided an opportunity to assist the Special Olympics State Bowling Tournament held here in Indianapolis. According to one club member, "It was a wonderful event! You would be amazed at the things you can learn. It was a very rewarding experience."

In the spring, the club held a fundraiser at Fazoli's to purchase club t-shirts and once again helped the university host the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) YES clinic. This event, held in conjunction with the men's Final Four, allowed the club members to work directly with area youth to develop both basketball skills and life skills. Club members gained valuable experience in both the preparation and administration of the clinic as well as instruction and organization of a major sport event.
